Chairwoman of German Green Party Says Turkey Can Only Go To EU Through Diyarbakir BY SAID KHAN KURZAHGERMANY:
Claudia Roth, the chairwoman of the German Green Party stated that if the Kurdish problem is not solved in a peaceful way, Turkey will not become a member of the European Union (EU). “The way to EU goes through
Diyarbakir,” Roth told Turkish Prime Minister Tayyip Erdogan, in reference to the capital of Turkish Kurdistan.
Roth recently visited the Kurdish areas of Iraq and Turkey, meeting with top officials. In an interview with Rudaw, she said that one of the purposes of her visits was to have information about the situation in the region since parliamentary elections were held in Iraq on March 7.
She said that in Iraq “Kurds are playing an important role in establishing the new government”.
In her last visit, Roth arrived in Turkey’s Kurdish provinces of Jazeer, Haskef and Dyarbakir. She spoke to the people and Kurdish officials about the political and economic life of the Kurds.
“As you are aware of the ‘Democratic Opening’ process put forth by the Turkish government, this process brought Kurds new hope, but after the closure of the pro-Kurdish Democratic Society Party known as DTP, this hope did not remain. I want to know how another solution can be found for the Kurdish issue,” said Roth.
She said that Kurdish demands in Turkey are fair, confirming her support for Kurdish demands. She hoped that the democracy initiation process in Turkey continues.
“I am very sad for the children who are still kept in jail for throwing stones. I am very sorry for 1500 members of DTP who are behind bars. I am very sorry that Ahmed Turk has been prevented from involvement in politics and for what happened to him in Samsun city where he was attacked by Turkish chauvinists.”
She also praised the efforts of Justice and Development Party (AKP) to amend the Turkish constitution. “Changing the Turkish constitution is very necessary. It should have happen earlier. The current Turkish constitution was written during the coup of 12 September 1980 which is a militarist and undemocratic one,” said Claudia Roth.
“I met with many people in Turkey; most of them don’t like having a militarist law. Turkey needs a new civilian and democratic law. The rights of the minorities must be protected in the Turkish constitution,” she said.
