| Buttercups and Daisiesby Mary HowittButtercups and daisies- Oh the pretty flowers, Coming ere the springtime, To tell of sunny hours. While the trees are leafless, While the fields are bare, Buttercups and daisies Spring up here and there. Ere the snowdrop peepeth, Ere the croscus bold, Ere the early primrose Opes its paly gold. Somewhere on a sunny bank Buttercups are bright; Somewhere 'mong the frozen grass Peeps the daisy white. Little hardy flowers Like to children poor, Playing in their sturdy health By their mother's door: Purple with the north wind, Yet alert and bold; Fearing not and caring not, Though they be a-cold. What to them is weather! What are stormy showers! Buttercups and daisies Are these human flowers! He who gave them hardship And a life of care, Gave them likewise hardy strength, And patient hearts, to bear. Welcome yellow buttercups, Welcome daisies white, Ye are in my spirit Visioned, a delight! Coming ere the springtime Of sunny hours to tell- Speaking to our hearts of Him Who doeth all things well. | All Things Bright and Beautifulby Cecil Frances AlexanderAll things bright and beautiful, All creatures great and small, All things wise and wonderful, The Lord God made them all. Each little flower that opens, Each little bird that sings. He made their glowing colors, He made their tiny wings. The purple-headed mountain, The river running by, The sunset, and the morning, That brightens up the sky; The cold wind in the winter, The pleasant summer sun, The ripe fruits in the garden. He made them every one. He gave us eyes to see them, And lips that we might tell, How great is God Almighty, Who has made all things well. Miss Orange |

| My Chicken's On the InternetKenn Nesbitt. My chicken's on the Internet She surfs the web all day I've tried to stop her browsing .but, so far, there's just no way She jumps up on the mouse and then she flaps around like mad to click on every hyperlink and every pop-up ad She plays all sorts of chicken games She messages her folks She watches chicken videos and forwards chicken jokes She writes a blog for chickens and she uploads chicken pics She visits chicken chat rooms where she clucks about her chicks I wouldn't mind so much except my keyboard's now a wreck She hasn't learned to type yet she can only hunt and peck Miss Orange |

| Bring Your Own Lunch by Bruce Lansky Don’t eat school lunches— not even a lick. They might make you nauseous. They might make you sick. Just take a small bite and you’ll start to feel ill. If the veggies don’t get you, the meatloaf sure will. Miss Orange |

| Food Fight by Kenn Nesbitt
We’d never seen the teachers in a state of such distress The principal was yelling that the lunchroom was a mess It started off so innocent when someone threw a bun but all the other kids decided they should join the fun It instantly turned into an enormous lunchroom feud as students started hurling all their halfway-eaten food A glob went whizzing through the air impacting on the wall Another chunk went sailing out the doorway to the hall The food was splattered everywhere the ceilings, walls, and doors A sloppy, gloppy mess was on the tables and the floors And so our good custodian ran out to grab his mop It took him half the afternoon to clean up all the slop The teachers even used some words we’re not supposed to mention And that’s how all the kids and teachers wound up in detention %%%%Best Wishes Marvy |

| A Light Exists in Spring ~ by Emily DickinsonA Light exists in Spring Not present on the Year At any other period -- When March is scarcely here A Color stands abroad On Solitary Fields That Science cannot overtake But Human Nature feels. It waits upon the Lawn, It shows the furthest Tree Upon the furthest Slope you know It almost speaks to you. Then as Horizons step Or Noons report away Without the Formula of sound It passes and we stay -- A quality of loss Affecting our Content As Trade had suddenly encroached Upon a Sacrament. | My Birthday's on St. Patrick's Day--Kenn NesbittMy birthday's on St. Patrick's day. I wore no green at all, and got a pinch from every kid who passed me in the hall. You get "a pinch to grow an inch" whenever birthdays fall. I guess they must have worked because I'm thirty-nine feet tall. Miss Orange |

| Tree HuggersChildren of the fragile forest gather around Where bird song seems to be the loudest sound A place called Summer, green as you could please A place where we all proudly hug the trees Hug trees for the walnuts and sweet apples For the shade above small country chapels For giving squirrel and crow a place to live For the priceless gift of oxygen they give Follow your feet across a woodland floor Beneath the tall and ancient sycamore Under redwood, under tall blue pine Come with me and form an endless line Join the boy whose name is simply ME Take your turn and hug a mighty tree A wish we cast upon an August breeze A dream to cross the seven sacred seas Release it now, just like a big balloon A prayer to reach the mountains of the moon To citizens of Earth alas we say Go find yourself a tree to hug today And if a grownup says Don’t be a fool Or Is that what they’re teaching you in school Just find this poem and read this simple rhyme It’s cool to HUG a TREE from time to time Children this is how the world can be Making Earth plan A and not plan B Wear Change! Share Change! Sing Change! Bring Change And start by hugging a tree %%%%%%Best Wishes Marvy |

| I Have to Write a Poem--Kenn NesbittI have to write a poem but I really don't know how. So maybe I'll just make a rhyme with something dumb, like "cow." Okay, I'll write about a cow, but that's so commonplace. I think I'll have to make her be... a cow from outer space! My cow will need a helmet and a space suit and a ship. Of course, she'll keep a blaster in the holster on her hip. She'll hurtle through the galaxy on meteoric flights to battle monkey aliens in huge karate fights. She'll duel with laser sabers while avoiding lava spray to vanquish evil emperors and always save the day. I hope the teacher likes my tale, "Amazing Astro Cow." Yes, that's the poem I will write as soon as I learn how Miss Orange |

| My Dog Chewed Up My Homework by Bruce LanskyI’m glad to say my homework’s done. I finished it last night. I’ve got it right here in this box. It’s not a pretty sight. My dog chewed up my homework. He slobbered on it, too. So now my homework’s ripped to shreds and full of slimy goo. It isn’t much to look at, but I brought it anyway. I’m going to dump it on your desk if I don’t get an A.
